Raise Your Glass — Favorite Social Drinks for a Great Gathering or Home Party

By Everett Mangum | September 6, 2026

There is something that happens when good people gather in a good space with good drinks in hand. Conversations deepen. Laughs get louder. Stories get told that probably should not be told — and that is precisely what makes them memorable. Whether it is a backyard get-together, a holiday celebration, a birthday, or just a Friday night that refused to be ordinary, the right drink in the right atmosphere turns a gathering into an actual event.

I love hosting. I love the energy of a room full of people who are genuinely enjoying themselves. And I believe — firmly — that a good host thinks about what is in everybody's glass just as much as what is on the table. So today I want to talk drinks. The social kind. The kind that make people relax, open up, and stay a little longer than they planned. And I want to hear from you too — because the best drink recipes I have ever encountered came from someone at a party handing me a glass and saying "just try it."
My Personal Go-To — Scotch on the Rocks

I will not pretend to be complicated about it. When it comes to my own glass, I keep it simple and I keep it quality. Scotch on the rocks. That is it. No mixers, no garnish, no fuss. Just a good Scotch, a few clean ice cubes, and a comfortable chair somewhere nearby.

My preference? Chivas Regal 12. Smooth, balanced, a little honey and fruit warmth to it — approachable enough for people who think they don't like Scotch, refined enough that the Scotch people in the room will nod approvingly. Other names worth having on your shelf when you're hosting:

Johnnie Walker Black Label — smooth, smoky, universally crowd-pleasing

Glenfiddich 12 — lighter, fruity, a great entry-level single malt

Dewar's White Label — affordable, clean, blended beautifully for a crowd

Macallan 12 — rich, sherried, smooth as a handshake from a trusted friend

If you want to impress without spending a fortune, set two or three of these on a table with a bucket of good ice and let your guests explore. You will look like you know exactly what you are doing. Because you will.
The Cocktail I Always Have Ready — The Rob Roy

If Scotch on the rocks is the quiet elder statesman of my drink collection, the Rob Roy is its more social and charming younger brother. This is one of the most classic Scotch cocktails in existence — essentially a Manhattan made with Scotch instead of bourbon — and it plays beautifully at a party because it is easy to make in batches, looks absolutely stunning in the glass, and tastes like you spent more effort than you actually did.
🥃 The Rob Roy — Classic Recipe

What you need:

2 oz blended Scotch whisky (Chivas Regal or Dewar's work perfectly here)

1 oz sweet vermouth

2 dashes Angostura bitters

Ice

Maraschino cherry or lemon twist for garnish

How to make it:

Fill a mixing glass with ice

Pour in the Scotch, sweet vermouth, and bitters

Stir — don't shake — for about 20–30 seconds until well chilled

Strain into a chilled cocktail glass

Garnish with a cherry or a twist of lemon peel

Hand it to someone and watch their eyebrows go up

That is genuinely it. Five minutes, five ingredients, and your guests will think you hired a bartender. Make a big batch in a pitcher ahead of time — just keep it cold and stir before pouring. Perfect for a party where you actually want to be at the party instead of behind the bar all night.
A Few Golden Rules for Hosting a Great Party — Responsibly

The fun of hosting is real. The responsibility of hosting is equally real. A few things I keep in mind every time:

Always have great non-alcoholic options available — sparkling water, quality sodas, mocktails, juice. Make the non-drinkers feel just as celebrated as everyone else. A good host never makes a guest feel out of place for what is in their glass.

Feed people. Alcohol and empty stomachs are not a good team. Good food keeps the evening fun and balanced.

Know your guests. Some people have one drink and call it a perfect night. Others keep pace differently. Pay attention without making it a thing.

Arrange rides in advance. Before the first bottle is opened, make sure everyone has a way home that does not involve a questionable decision. Rideshare apps exist for exactly this reason. Put it on the table early and make it completely normal and easy.

The best parties end with everyone safe, happy, and already talking about the next one. That is the whole goal.

Now It's Your Turn — Tell Me Yours! 👇

Here is where I want to hear from YOU. What is your go-to drink at a social gathering? What do you make when you are hosting and you want to genuinely impress? What is the recipe that always gets asked for? What is the story behind it?

Drop it in the comments below — drink name, how to make it, and if there is a good story attached to it then even better. I read every single one and I will be featuring the best reader submissions in a future post.

Whether it is a classic cocktail, a regional specialty, a family recipe, or something you invented by accident on a Tuesday that turned out to be brilliant — let's hear it. The comment section is open and the virtual bar is officially stocked.

Cheers, friends. Drink good things. Drink responsibly. And always, always be the kind of host people talk about on the way home.
